Construction of suburban malls continued through the 1970s. Pope & Carter, which had developed Atlanta’s first indoor shopping mall in 1964, opened three more Atlanta malls in the 1970s. Hardin Construction was the builder and Rutland Contracting Company prepared the sites for all three malls.
Northlake Mall opened in 1971 and served as an anchor for a 225-acre, mixed-use development. Cumberland Mall opened in 1973, and was Georgia’s largest mall at the time. It was also the state’s first mall with four anchor tenants, and had parking for 5,200 cars. Southlake Mall opened just south of the city in 1976, also with four anchor tenants.
